The film tells the story of Wan Quanhe, a barefoot doctor, and his absurd yet happy life. Wan Quanhe, a rural young man with limited intelligence, is inspired a city girl called Ma Li, and he spends 50 years “treating” villagers and researching herbal medicine in order to become the person Ma Li expects him to be. However, when Ma Li returns to the city, she has already forgotten about him. Wan Quanhe is like the Chinese version of Forrest Gump and Sisyphus. Whether his life is happy or unfortunate is open to interpretation.
